Become a S.A.N.E.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners are nurses who decide to take their career a step further by getting trained to help victims of sexual assault. SANEs are vital to the functioning of the Teal House and other community-based sexual assault centers. Having a single patient for 2 to 5 hours is not realistic in most emergency departments. Therefore, community agencies, such as the Teal House, are seeing more sexual assault victims, as they have the time, equipment, and training to conduct the exam. At the end of the day, we need SANEs in order to offer these services. You are valued, you are needed, and you are wanted. Please consider joining our team!

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner is a specially trained, certified nurse who collects evidence for law enforcement. The S.A.N.E. program is designed for registered nurses or nurse practitioners interested in providing forensic medical assessment and care to adult and adolescent survivors of sexual assault.

A 40-hour didactic course and 40-hour clinical preceptorship is designed to provide you with a comprehensive education program in assessment, examination, and collection of forensic evidence. This will take place with our SANE Coordinator.

Current Georgia nursing license, two years nursing experience, current malpractice insurance, and current CPR certification.

You will be expected to be on call for either a 12 hour shift or 24 hour shift. On call hours can be negotiated with the SANE Coordinator. Exams will last from two to five hours. The average exam lasts around three hours. SANE’s meet monthly with the SANE Coordinator for training and education.

You can choose to be trained for adolescent-adult patients (SANE-A) or pediatric patients (SANE-P). You can be trained in both, but they are separate 40 hour trainings.

Yes. For more information on that please contact the SANE Coordinator using the information below.
